Sooty & Sweep
In 1948, on Blackpool's North Pier, Harry Corbett paid 7 shillings and sixpence for a yellow bear he called Teddy. A little ear blackening later, Teddy became Sooty, and fifty years later he's worth £1.4M and still going strong. It was 1953 before Sweep - a squeaking dog - joined Sooty, and another 10 years before Sooty got a girlfriend in the form of Soo - a talking Panda. More friends appeared as time went on, including Butch the dog, and Ramsbottom the snake.
When, in 1975, Harry Corbett suffered a heart-attack, his son, Matthew bought the rights to the Sooty Show for £27,000. When Harry recovered, and wanted the show back, he had to settle for taking the tour round seaside resorts, and Matthew kept the Television rights. Harry Corbett died, in 1989.
